Note: "We find here a man of faith; a man who submits to affliction without murmuring. In all his history we find that he followed the commandments of the Lord. The Lord said to him in the beginning that if he followed His commandments he should be prospered in the land, and he was prospered. I wish to bear my testimony to the Latter-day Saints that all of us who will obey the commandments of God will be prospered in the land. Sacrifice doth bring forth the blessings of heaven." Heber J. Grant (Conference Report, Oct. 1899, p. 19)

And now, they said: We know of a surety that the Lord is with thee, for we know that it is the power of the Lord that has shaken us. And they fell down before me, and were about to worship me, but I would not suffer them, saying: I am thy brother, yea, even thy younger brother; wherefore, worship the Lord thy God, and honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God shall give thee.

Note: "God revealed to Nephi the neccessity of building a ship. The means were not within his reach, but he felt it was right to build, and with that knowledge he proceeded to find the way to make the tools and build the ship. Did he make mistakes? Did he falter? No doubt,-else why did his murmuring brothers say: 'We told you you could not build a ship; we knew you did not have the widsdom.' But he knew he was right, and he knew that God would strengthen him in building. That thought held him; it supported him; and he succeeded in the task before him. So it is with us; when we are asked to do a thing, the question in our minds should be: Is that necessary; is that right? If so, then it shall be done, and God will open the way." David O. McKay (Conference Report, Apr. 1909, p. 68)

Some so-called experts of political science want the prophet to keep still on politics. Some would-be authorities on evolution want the prophet to keep still on evolution. "'Heed', as it is used in the Book of Mormon, has a certain permanency about it that is opposite to temporary obedience or alternating 'on again-off again' obedience. It is understood that as you continue to heed the Lord, you will not waver, vacillate, or complain, but rahter, you will weather the storm and persevere no matter what you may be called upon to endure: [1 Nephi 16:3]. Sometimes heed can mean to be careful. In King Benjamin's great sermon, at the temple, he tells us that we must take upon ourselves the name of Christ and then be careful to avoid transgression:
"[Mosiah 5:11 and Moroni 7:14]....The Prophet Joseph used the word heed in telling the brethren that their mind, or intellect, could learn more than they thought. Contrary to the 'Fixed I.Q. Theory,' he taught: 'God has created man capable of instruction, with a faculty which may be enlarged in proportion to the heed and diligence given to the light communicated from heaven to the intellect.' (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 51.) Could not this same principle apply to the Spirit?"

Note: "From the standpoint of numbers, equipment, training, and resources, the rag-tag army of the Colonists should never have won the war for independence. But America's destiny was not to be determined by overwhelming numbers, or better military weapons or strategy. As Adams declared: 'There's a divinity which shapes our ends.' God took a direct hand in the events that led to the defeat of the British. When the war was over, here is how Washington ascribed the victory; 'The success, which has hitherto attended our united efforts, we owe to the gracious interposition of heaven, and to that interposition let us gratefuly ascribe the praise of victory, and the blessings of peace.' (To the Executives of New Hampshire, Nov. 3 1789) It seems fashionable today for historians to 'secularize' our history. Mny modern scholars seem uncomfortable with the idea that a Divine Power had a hand in the beginnings of our nation. They seek to explain away what the colonists themselves saw as divine intervention in their behalf."

It acts like a caution sign. It warns us of possible danger ahead. Temptation can alert the mind to turn away from an improper thought or act. As eternal beings living this earthly experience, we will not be free from temptation. Temptation implies an inner struggle to do that which is right....We should expect temptation, for without temptations there would be little education and little character improvement." Rulon G. Craven (Ensign, May 1996, pp. 76-77)

Note: "What young musician, after years of agonizing rehearsal was finally scheduled to debut in a capacity concert hall, would, while en route to the performance, stop to join a long line forming at the latest his movie, forgetting the thousands of people waiting to hear her? What world-class runner, after training for well over a decade, would find himself in the Olympic finals, only to stop running halfway through his race to watch the high-jump finals taking place on the other side of the field? These examples may seem preposterous-but how much more tragic for someone who, equipped with a testimony of the truth and a knowledge of the purpose of life, becomes more absorbed in life today than in life forever. Who's just a little more concerned about his or her status and standing in mortality than in eternity. Whose focus is not directed to God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ." Marvin J. Different words are used in these languages to differentiate between (1) a riverbed that has water flowing in it and (2) a dry riverbed. Few people, it seems, belive in postponement-if we want something, we want it now....There seems to be a follow-up principle to sacrificing: Whenever we give some-thing up or go without, we find ourselves in possession of more and greater" Kelly Ogden (Studies in Scripture, ed. by K. Note: Whose traditions do we follow? See Mosiah 1:5. We are also children of the prophets.
"I would invite all of us to take a moment to reflect on the traditions in our lives and how they might be affecting our families. Our traditions of Sabbath day observance, family prayer, family scripture study, service and activity in the Church, as well as patterns of respect and loyalty in the home, will have a great effect on our children and on their future. If our parenting is based on the teachings of the scriptures and of the latter-day prophets, we cannot go wrong. If every time there is a challenge our hearts turn first and always to our Father in Heaven for direction, we will be in a safe place. If our children know where we stand and we always stand on the Lord’s side, we know we are where we need to be."

Note: What the members of the Church possess is a "pearl of great price," yet sometimes this priceless gem is so familiar to us that we do not appreciate its true value. While it is true that we should not cast our pearls before swine, this does not mean we should not share them with people who will appreciate their value. One of the great side benefits of missionary work is watching the great value that others who have not previously heard about our beliefs attach to them. There is a great benefit in seeing one's treasures through someone else's eyes. My concern is that we often take for granted the unique and valuable blessings that we have of membership in the Lord's Church, and in such a state of underappreciation we are more likely to be complacent about our Church membership and are less valiant contributors to building a community of Saints.

Note: "We live in a world in which many situations require us to make judgments that are often difficult. Yet the Savior gave the commandment to "judge not" our fellowman. (Matthew 7:1. See also Matthew 7:1, footnote a; from Joseph Smith Translation, where the Savior commands us to "judge not unrighteously.") How can we do this and still exercise good judgment in a world full of deception and corruption? We must judge well when making critical decisions in each phase of our life, such as choosing friends, finding an eternal companion, or choosing an occupation that will allow us to care for our family and serve the Lord. Although the Savior asked us not to judge others, He still expects us to use excellent judgment.
"Christ said: 'Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.' (John 14:27.) The peace that comes from listening to the Holy Spirit removes the fear of making a poor judgment in life." Elder Gregory A. Schwitzer

Note: Cubit comes from the Latin cubitas, meaning "the elbow", and origginall signified the length from the tip of the middle finger to the elbow. Though it has varied throughout the ages it was about a foot and a half. One hundred and forty-four cubits would be about 216 feet. The significance of the number may be symbolical however. Twelve is associated throughout with the holy city, and 144 is twelve squared.

[Read D&C 63:17, 18.]
